Video games are pretty incredible. Being able to play them without issue is something we all take for granted. Others aren't so lucky. SpecialEffect is a UK-based charity that works to ensure that video games are accessible for all. Their team of occupational therapists and gaming specialists create bespoke gaming setups for hundreds of individuals each year. Their R&D team then uses what they learn to develop freely available resources to help level the playing field for gamers with physical challenges all over the world.
For the last 10 years, they've single-handedly shepherded the UK games industry to support their One Special Day initiative, a yearly fundraising event that is the flagship of their charity efforts. Publishers work together to bundle their titles, with proceeds going to the charity. Developers organise staff events where competition and donations are encouraged. Content creators undertake feats of skill and themed streams with a charity call to action. Every little helps!
